Hi all,
just bought a mkii 2.3 auto, 2004, all was working fine, started it up today went for a spin, and when I put it in the tiptronic setting the display on the dash say's it's in 3rd gear but will not change up nor down, other than that the box seems to be working fine, when I bought the car last thursday I checked the tiptronic and it was working fine.
Any ideas???

Need to get it plugged in and scanned for fault codes I reckon,then take it from there

ok, guy next door had an obd reader it's throwing up this fault

Looks to me like he has scanned engine and it has registered in engine control unit there is fault with transmission.
You need to get auto box ecu scanned for a proper transmission fault code

get yourself a lead free ebay and download the free vcds software, will plug in and read any codes from most of the important controllers, will save you a fortune
just noticed its a 2.3 dont think it works with the engine as its not VW but im sure someone else will know if it will read the rest of car inc. gearbox
Vcds will read rest of the car as its VAG control units.
Not sure about transmission when it has the ford 2.3 engine fitted might also have ford auto box??
Thanks for the help, :) From what I understand all the auto boxes are VW Group AG4 boxes so hopefully the free software and lead will work.

AG4 is the old gearbox fitted to the Mk1 Galaxy only (no tiptronic)
09B is the 'new' version fitted to the Mk2, a varient of the 09A box fitted to the Golf/Passat etc but with lower ratios.
Took it to an auto box place today, they scanned the gearbox ecu and it came back with a speed sensor fault, fairly cheap to fix so all's good.

Fingers crossed new speed sensor and all is good again.
P0700 does suggest a speed sensor issue after reading up on it,something to do with differential in rpm between engine and transmission.
Am sure this P0700 is only a generic code and will need VCDS to interrogate the transmission module to give a clearer picture hopefully.
On another note, when I took it into the auto gearbox place there were three mk111's up on lifts, the guy in there said you want to count yourself lucky you have a mk11, he says the mk111's auto boxes are very expensive to repair and do not last as long as the mk11's, all the mk111's where mini cabs so very high miles.
Don't know how true this is, but he seems to rate the VW boxes over the ford ones.

The problem with the Ford boxes is that the clutches are wet and contaminate the oil. Not a problem if the oil is changed regularly (every 37,000miles/60,000km) but the oil (not ATF) alone is nearly Ã,£200 and it's easy to make a mess of the change if you don't know what you're doing.
Which seems to be common.
Ok, so the garage have priced replacing the speed sensor way too high, need to do this myself if I can. Question is where on the gearbox is the speed sensor? VCDS is telling me it's an AG4 box. resetting the fault code lasts for a few day's then it returns.

I think the speed sensors are on top of the transmission under the mounting bracket?
VW auto box top mounts are usually held on with torque to yield bolts I would imagine the Galaxy would be the same. If the mount bracket needs to come off don't forget to change the bolts and torque up correctly

If memory serves correctly there are 3 one in diff housing for speedo.
2 on top the one under mount is g68 which is for output speed.
And finally there is one on top in centre that senses speed inside box.
What sensor is deemed faulty on yours?
g68 is throwing up the fault code.

That's the one under mount with the longer loom.
So long as you got a selection of tools and a jack I don't see it is difficult to change yourself.
get car up on stands and remove lower splash guard tray,support gearbox weight with a jack and block of wood. Take battery and battery tray out and then take the mounting off the sensor should be visible then to be able to get it out.
Make sure you replace the stretch bolts on mounting and torque them to 60nm and then 90 degrees. Make sure weight is fully supported when tightening the bolts.

I'd check the wiring/connector first, as it may be the loom to the sensor, or the connector on the sensor.
