Title: lacks power but restart and its perfect 2001 Galaxy disel 2.0
Post by: Nuttycapri on April 16, 2016, 01:50:50 PM
Hi people
OK, no fault codes/warning lights. If you drive normally (no racing starts) everything is fine, full power no problems. If you accelerate too much you get to rev. limiter stage, engine suddenly loses power (just like turbo has packed up - without the smoke). Any slight hill and its 3rd or 4th gear and absolutely no acceleration. If I pull over and turn the engine off and restart straight away, I am back to full power. It's like something has stuck open (wastegate/actuator/valve etc.). Drive carefully again and it has full power until you accelerate hard again, then loss of power all over again. So it's not blown turbo or pipes off / vacuum leaks as it is a temporary problem.
Any known issues?
All help gratefully received
Andy

Hello Andy  welcome5

What are you using to check for fault codes? VCDS lite is ideal for your car.
Sounds like you have the classic boost issues which give limp mode which is reset after a restart.

17964 P1556 Charge pressure control negative deviation or underboost
17965 P1557 Charge pressure control positive deviation or overboost.

Both can be caused by sticking turbo vanes which will require cleaning

Thanks Chris

Don't have VCDS, so using standard garage OBD2 machine (Autel professional) - picked up parking sensor fault, so hoping it will pick others up.

I have no fault codes showing at present (or pending).

Thanks for the links, will have a look at them now.

Thanks again

Andy

In a cold engine stick your hand down back and see if you can easily move the turbo vnt actuator rod,it should have resistance when moving but should be able to be pushed down and return to its stop un aided.

Also when started on idle it should be pulled all the way down.

Check the turbo switches on the right above the diesel filter , you need to check on the parts of the switch where the pipes join as the plastic can crack and you lose power that way . What you describe sounds like a turbo air pressure leak !

Whereabouts in the South East are you, Andy? I am in Maidstone and have VCDS on my laptop if you want a scan and am happy to help.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the mass air flow sensor unit .It's situated in the large pipe that comes out of the air filter and has a wiring plug connected to it. You are resetting it when you turn off/on the ignition. When I fitted mine(10 mins) it was like a new engine. Hope this helps.

Hi, both faulty MAF sensor and turbo boost issues should cause engine fault codes, although I'm not sure if turbo boost issue's put engine management light on. If you have an Autel code reader make sure you are in the EOBD2 section to read engine fault codes. The reader has to be in a different section  to pick up parking sensor codes.

Faulty maf does not always show a code you need measuring blocks to see how it is performing.
Much same as map you need measuring blocks to check specified boost against actual boost.
Even if code logged does not always put light on
