I've seen there has been many entries on the cruise control failing.
I have the MK 2 2.3 and from what i understand is the vacuum based not ECU.
My cruise control does not work what so ever. I flick the switch and hit the set when i reach 70MPH how i decrease speed.
I've seen may people saying that the vacuum pump has gone, or the pipes may have splits.
Could anyone confirm?
If so, do anyone know the best part to replace first?
Also the location of such part?
The Vac pipes are the most likely culprit as they deteriorate and fail over time, the pump is less likely unless the pipes have been gone for some time as it can then suck water and general shite in!
The pump is between the inner and outer wings of the passenger side so the choice for access is to remove the headlight or remove the wheel and liner. The headlight would be my starting point as you are at the right height then!
When I did my 2.3 Mk1 The pipes had perished at the pump, the first joint in the engine bay and the second joint :( From the pump it enters the engine bay and does a 90 to go up the passenger side wing. Thats the first joint. From there is turns into a plastic pipe and heads up the wing and over the top of the engine bay where it turns back into rubber (second joint} before going into the cabin.
If you can, please take some photos of what you find as its one of the how-to's I'd like to write but don't have a 2.3 anymore!

I will be looking at doing this hopefully next weekend.
I'll go for the headlight option, as when i removing the liner in the wheel arch on my old focus it was a absolute pain.
If it is the pipes, then im sure ill have to bit the bullet and take the liner out. I live on a hill with no drive way so its always a pin working on the car when the wheels need to come off.
Is there any pipes inside the car that may have deteriorate?
The haynes manual suggest there is behind the fuse box, however I don't rate the galaxy mk2 manual as most of the references are wrong.
Yes the pipe from the engine bay connected to a series of switches on the pedals, they may have gone but its much less likely.
When I did mine there was enough slack in the existing pipe to cut it back and reuse as a temp fix. I did replace the entire section in the end with fuel line to ensure it didn't break again.

I know the back switch is fine as my brake lights work.
Clutch switch is completing a circuit so i would assume this is fine.
The pipe from the engine bay, how easy is it to replace into the cabin? Doing a throttle cable on my old car was a right pain.
Also the fuel pipe, what was the size of this?
Ahh they are the electrical switches, there are also vacuum switches!
The pipe is relatively easy, tape the new one to the old one - lightly oil it and then pull it through.
It was 4 cars and many, many, drunken nights ago - I can't remember the size!

That wont be a problem.
I took a quick a moment ago, and without lifting the headlamp out i can seem to find any vacuum pumps or rubber wires.
I can see all the mains leads connecting to the fuse box near the battery.
Does anyone know what the vacuum pump should look like when installed?
So found the vacuum pump only to find both pipe were completely destroyed
I manage to salvage some of the pipe and install the top left to bottom left and top right to bottom right. As the pipe was so destroyed i can only imagine this is the most logical way.
Can anyone confirm?
I took the car out for a spin after checking there was no further splits in the pipe however still cruise control didnt work
There was no light on the dash either
Im assuming the pump itself has gone. However it doesnt look possible to teplace without taking the wing off
Has anyone managed to do it with the wing on?

Looking at replacing the vacuum pump tonight.
Can anyone confirm if the pipes are going to the right location?
I have attached an image how i connected the originals back up, however as the pipes we so damaged, I have no idea of their original location
Response ASAP would be hugely appreciated.

I'm afraid not. It doesn't appear to be clear which ventilation hose goes to which.
Google and my Haynes manual don't clarify either.
I've been through that manual multiple times and cant quite make out the drawings.
Unfortunately form i couldn't match the pipes up from the tears either.
The way i've don't it is most certainly the logical way, however I don't want to install a new vacuum pump to find i've wired the hoses up wrong.
Hi all
So some positive news tonight
Took the vacuum pump out and i confirm this was working but connecting positive and netural to two of the pins
Then move postive to other pin and all was fine.
Reinstall back into car after stripping down and replacing all visible pipe work
Re-installed the in/out pipe and put headlamp back on.
Took for a spin and as soon a i hit 30 flicked the cc switch on and hey presto
Now alls workin im going to grab some fuel line as the current pipe wont last for long. Ill do a proper write up with pictures mirez
Might be worth putting this in the knowlege base
Also in found two bolt which makes removal of the pump a piece of pxxs
So there is no need to go under the wheel arch on the 2.3
