Hi all,
Just joined today as I'm trying to find the cause of a strange noise coming from offside of engine bay of my 02 1.9 tdi auto.
When the car is put under hard load, there is a very loud gurgling / rasping kind of noise. Accelerate normally and the noise doesn't appear to be there.
I've only just bought the car with 138k miles and fsh.
The noise is worrying me as its fairly loud from inside the cabin.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
Chris

Sounds very much like turbo chatter which resonates through the air intake and is normally accompanied with overboost which will at some point cause the car to go into limp mode (reduced power) you can exaggerate the noise by removing the air filter cover and running engine.
You may want to get this sorted while under warranty as this can be costly for you if left.
Thanks for replying.
Unfortunately I bought the car privately so no warranty on it.
If it is turbo chatter, anyway I can sort it myself?
What's involved in fixing it?
Lets make sure it's what I said first.
Remove the filter lid and listen, if the noise you can hear is more pronounced then you have a problem.
Finally got round to Doing this today and it does sound noisier.
So, what's my next course of action?
What exactly causes this ' turbo chatter' ?
I've been told that '10k diesel power restorer' might be worth a try.
Thanks
Chris
Turbo chatter generally sounds like a chipmunk/dolphin shouting :) but is nearly always on overrun - ie when you let off the accelerator after a burst of acceleration.
A metallic raspy noise only during full acceleration would to me indicate excess turbo end-float caused by a worn turbo shaft. The only way to diagnose that is to take the pipe off going into the turbo and feel the turbine for play. Any chance of a youtube video of the noise? Its notoriously hard to diagnose noises over the internet :)
Ill try and get a video clip of it this evening and upload it.
It is a metallic rasping sound and it's only heard under full
Acceleration. Cruising along its pretty quiet.
