Been on a run today of about 220 miles doing 70-75 mph according to mfd averaged 40mpg is that about same as other mark 2 owners achieve?
Talking of the mfd noticed it starts to get dead pixels after about an hour any fixes for this or does it just need new display?
About right
Drop down to an average of 60 mph and you will see the right side of 50mpg.
Best I've seen on a long motorway run (300 odd miles) with a full load of passengers and average speed of 75-80 was 39mpg, on slower 'A' roads the best average I've seen on a run is about 42mpg.
As for the FIS display there are people who can repair 'em, I've no experience of this (http://www.cartronix.co.uk/?gclid=CLqW4MnCusUCFWfItAodW2YA-A) company but they do state that they repair these kind of faults.......
Its a tad low I guess, but then they do seem to vary widely depending on driver style amongst other factors. I would probably see 44ish at that pace but as able, easily in the high 40's or early 50's when down at 60.
Cluster faults are common on VDO clusters of the era (all VW's!) and will require a replacement display panel. If you are good with soldering then its not all that tricky providing you have a small nibbed iron
Hello. I regularly achieve 54 mpg with 60mph on the highway with very conservative driving style. My best to the date was 60 mpg on a long (300 miles) run with average 50 mph. But as bigjeeze states if you go up with the speed - say 70 mph the consumption increases to ar. 50 mpg.
I was expecting a bit better than what I achieved,I know it is heavier but I had a Passat b5.5 with 130awx engine and under similar driving conditions used to get well in to the 50's. I have a feeling setting torsion value to 0.0 could have something to do with it as the sticker on timing cover appears to suggest +0.63 from factory.
As for the display it is still readable so might just live with it for now as don't fancy soldering a fine ribbon on to board,I would end up wrecking the cluster.
Last long trip I did of around 200 miles in my auto 1.9 with 3 of us an a bit of luggage, sitting just over 70 with the cruse set I got 37 on the way there but was a wet windy day an 42 on the way back, nice dry day, just shows a far difference when running with lights heating an wipers going. Actually had a small run of about 60 miles at the weekend, doing 50-60 got 48 mpg, never got that high before!!
