Title: Loud "clunk" when coming off of accelerator pedal
Post by: ebo555 on January 09, 2016, 06:15:24 PM
Hi,

I'm a newbie to the forum and am in the process of buying my first MK3 Galaxy.

Having spent some time searching, I've found a very nice 2009 Ghia Diesel 2.0 (manual) and everything seems to check-out just fine.  On taking it for a test drive, I found that there was a very noticeable "clunk' or "knock" when lifting off of the accelerator pedal, as the engine starts to coast on overrun.  The sound seems to come from low down in the engine bay and occurs in any gear and appears about a second after lifting off the accelerator (as if the engine and transmission are catching-up with each other).

I can confirm that the noise doesn't happen if lifting-off the accelerator with the clutch depressed.  There was no noticeable clutch-slip (I tried moving away in 2nd gear) and the gears seemed to engage and shift as expected.

The person selling the vehicle was very pleasant about my concerns, but is adamant that it's nothing to worry about (no surprise there I guess).  As I'm on the verge of investing thousands of pounds, I'd like to know if anyone on the forum has an idea of what the sound may be - I've read horror stories about the dual-mass flywheel and clutch issues and really want to avoid experiencing these first hand!

Any ideas/suggestions will be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Ian.

Sounds like an engine mount to me probably the stabiliser one, with clutch depressed there is no load on it so that's why no clunk

Thanks for the reply.

Is it a huge job to change a Galaxy engine mount at home or will it need to be taken to a garage?  I'm pretty good with the spanners but have never worked on a Galaxy before.

My main worry was that it may be a dual-mass flywheel problem and would therefore cost a fortune to put right.  What are the general symptoms of a a DMF issue?

Thanks again,

Ian.

Just an FYI, it cost me Ã,£715 for a new clutch & dmf in my mk3 Galaxy.

My symptoms of dmf failure were a noticeable bag of spanners in a washing machine sound with a vibration you could feel through the clutch pedal.

Thanks for the info - this is really helpful.

There didn't seem to be any rattling or vibrations, so it may indicate that the DMF is still OK.

Hopefully your DMF/Clutch is fine and as Johnny said it could be an engine mount.

I've been told that with DMFs you should always engage the clutch when starting and shutting off the engine to reduce wear so you get more longevity out of them. Of couse you have no way of knowing what any previous owners did in that regard.
