Title: Fault Code Meaning
Post by: NickJ on December 31, 2015, 11:35:38 AM
Hi, I has the dreaded "Check Engine Light" come on my 1.8 petrol Sharan, using my new  :) MaxiScan reader I got the code PO134 "02 Sensor circuit no activity detected Bank 1  Sensor 1"

What does this actually mean in laymans terms ?
There didn't appear to be any change in how the car drove after the light came on !

Any advice gratefully received, thanks Nick.

The sensor that detects the amount of oxygen in the exhaust output isn't reading correctly. To meet emissions regulations the ECU will adjust the amount of fuel and air to obtain a 'perfect' burn which should result in lower emissions, the amount of oxygen in the exhaust is how it measures this.

The code would indicate that it's no longer able to obtain the reading from the O2 sensor which would normally be caused by the sensor going bad. Typically you won't notice a huge difference as the ECU will revert to a 'safe' map but you will probably see your MPG figure begin to drop and it will almost certainly fail the MoT on emissions now (well also because a check light is on!).

Hi , many thanks for the info, do you think this would be a straightforward swap for a new sensor? I'm new to working on these cars but willing to have a go, most of my experience is with classics mainly air cooled vw' s
Looking on the Euro parts site I can't see anything listed as an o2 sensor would it be described as something else or is there somewhere else to look for the part?  Thanks again, Nick.
