Title: Water Pump Change Mk1 1.9 TDI
Post by: philco on December 10, 2015, 07:06:01 PM
Hi guys, I have the most horrible rattle on my wife's galaxy, I thought it would be the alternator..wrong!!
Took the belt off and fired the car up rattle is still there, I put my hand down the pulleys, after switching off of course!, and the pulley beneath the alternator wobbles about. The "V" belt comes off the crank pulley and is driving the power steering pump with the offending pulley in between is it the water pump or just some sort of idler/ tensioner.
Any help much appreciated
Thanks in advance.

G'day!

If it's the 3 bolt pulley immediately to the right of the crank pulley as per these (https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/ford-galaxy-mk1-auxiliary-drive-belt-routing/msg6684/#msg6684/) belt routing diagrams then yes, I would say it is the water pump. If on the other hand it's the one immediately below and to the left of the alternator then it would appear to be a tensioner pulley.

Much appreciated my friend, I thought it was the water pump but wanted to be sure, are they a pain to do or is it alternator off, so you can reach, belts off and off she comes?
Thanks again

If it is the accessory belt tensioner rattling whip belt off and check the alternator pulley first, they are a freewheeling clutch type. Mine was seized and caused horrendous noise and tensioner to rattle about
