I have had the one way clutch seize on my 04 galaxy tdi. i have changed the alternator (could not get the old pulley off as it was rusted and seized really bad), tensioner and belt but still have a squealing noise when driving. i only get this when revving the engine hard or accelerating although if i pull off gently i do not get a noise. any ideas what to check next as this car is slowly driving me mad!!!
Is it definitely coming from the alternator belt? If it is, other causes could be a worn air con compressor starting to seize or the power steering pump, but could the noise be coming from the cambelt? Is the cambelt up for renewal anytime soon?
I can't tell exactly where it is coming from.
Originally i thought it was the aux belt as the tensioner was jumping back and forth. The pulley was seized so i changed the alternator as i couldn't remove the pulley due to it being rusted on solid.
Unfortunately i have not idea what has been changed/serviced by the previous owner.
All i do know is that whoever worked on this car previously didn't have a clue what they were doing and the car has a laundry list of issues some of which were carefully hidden by the last owner prior to selling it (bulbs removed from dash so not to show up issues with abs module and VNT issue causing limp mode.) :(
Right then i think need to carry out more investigation/repairs, cam belt change is a must, do i change the water pump at the same time??
Is there anyway to check the AC compressor?
Would the power steering pump be the usual check, noise when turning under load??
If you don't want to go spending unnecessary money on the thing, take the plastic timing belt top cover off (two metal spring clips) and inspect the belt condition and tension first, although this won't tell you if the bearings in the tensioner or idler are on their way out and making the noise of course.
Regarding the power steering pump, yeah, turn the steering lock to lock and see if you can get it to misbehave. Does the air con actually work? If so, is the compressor making any nasty noises when it's running?
