Hi boys and gals (boom boom)
Went to start the car earlier and it just sat there turning over almost as if the battery was flat. Looked a bit further and found very little fuel in filter so poured some in and eventually it started and ran well but can see fuel dripping onto drive from back pf gearbox. Left it a few hours and it wont start again and again filter has no fuel, the tank pumps working and I cant see where the thing leeking is there a known issue? ?
Maybe the tandom pump? do they leek? Would have thought filter wouldny0t be empty as lower?
There's a few things in that area that could be leaking, the tandem pump like you say, the filter itself (is the drain on the bottom of it secure and not leaking?) or the fuel heater (the finned unit forward of the filter IIRC), or even a dodgy pipe union or connector. Has anything been recently disturbed? I don't think these kind of fuel leaks are common on the Mk2.
The filter hasn't got a drain which i found unusual? I still canny find the source of a leek though, the pipes are clean and no diesel seems to be coming from the finned thing. is the tandom pump a service item?
I had a leak from the tandem pump a few years back cost just over Ã,£300 for the pump, quite easy to fit.
ok boys and girls so I found the leak was coming from between the pump and the block. I have replaced the gasket and the leaking has stopped but i am still have some problems.
first it takes a long time to start, spluttering but will eventually start
it then runs for a short while before stalling out
I think it might be air in the system but dont know how to bleed this out. have changed the fuel filter and know there isn't any air in that. if I turn ignition on then I can hear the pump turning so that is running but have popped the return line off from the tandom pump and just a dribble came out. turning ignition on with that disconnected didn't make the fuel pour out??
Hm, it's possible that the reason for the original leak was that there was a fault/ wear in the tandem pump which allowed fuel to leak from the unit, replacement of the gasket may have stopped the leak for now but the fault with the pump still remains. Once any air had been purged from the fuel lines initially after working on the unit/ replacing the gasket I wouldn't have expected any further issues or bleeding to be required so it sounds like the pump itself may need replacement.
Although you say you can hear the intank pump with the inlet to the tandem pump removed you should get a good squirt of fuel from the intank, if your not getting this then you either have a faulty intank pump or a blockage.
Gheers fellas! So I took the pipe off the top connector of the tandem pump and turned the ignition on...... nadda. Took the spring clip off n' popped the plug on the fuel filter then turned ignition on and fuel pissed out of that hole so guessing the pump in the tank isn't goosed? Do ya think I have a blocked pipe or that little cooler thing is stuffed? Wots the sensor in the same pipe and could that be a problem?
Was thinking I could run the supply pipe back to the filter and ditch the cooler thing as a test is that ok to do?
Try disconnecting the fuel feed at the non return valve just by boost pressure sensor and checking for output there when turning ignition on.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted and my problem is now solved! while i was looking for prices on the gasket i came across the diagram for the fuel flow and it turned out when the garage fixed my gear links they put the flow and return pipes on the wrong way around. dunno why it drove ok back from them though but with them swapped it starts everytime. can someone with a 130 confirm that the pipes from the fuel filter cross over immediately?
This help? Its my TDI 130

Perfect thankyou!! :P
you see where the pipes come out of the fuel filter and cross over? they had them the other way around which looked more natural but aint right!! Ta fella
