Title: 2004 Galaxy Automatic Gearbox Issues
Post by: lengap on September 20, 2015, 02:22:20 PM
Hi all,

I have a 2004 Galaxy 1.9l diesel with an issue with the Automatic gearbox. This started a few months back but is now happening on every journey. The gearbox stays in first gearbox stays in first gear when you pull away and the revs will go up to 5000 plus before it changes up. Once it does change it jerks in to second. If you stamp on the peddle it will force it to second but if you leave it to change it can take 30 seconds plus. This is a nightmare driving around town as often between traffic lights it wonââ,¬â,,¢t change up!!

Also, when you are coming to a round about or junction you can feel the car drop quickly done to first as you can feel the jerk forward. When you feel this you know you are going to have the same issue when you pull away with the car stuck in first. If I pull away fast by stamping on the peddle it will change up but if I pull away at normal speed it will not change up. Have tried knocking the car in to tiptronic when the issue is happening but it wont change up or down in tiptronic. When you pull away and it is not changing up the tiptronic display is showing second gear but the car is in first.

Once the car is on a long journey it seems fine changing up and down ok. I have been trying to see if the issue is worse when cold or hot and this is not to obvious but if I had to choose then I'd say its better when hot.

As I say this started a few months ago and when I was checking in and around the engine I removed the engine under tray. I could see oil around the bottom of the gearbox. I wiped away this to see if I could see if it was coming from the gearbox. It was no obvious that it was coming from here but took the car to local garage where he replace the gearbox oil for me. Gearbox seemed to be slightly better for a week or so but not convinced that there was too much change.

A few weeks ago the car seems to lose power and there was a whoosing noise when you pout your foot down. I took the car to another local guy who placed the diagnostics on it to see if there where any faults showing. There was nothing showing as a error but we did find a spilt in the intercooler pipe. I changed this and power is all ok now.

The gearbox has now become a real pain. I do not have any gearbox experts close to where I live and my concern about taking it to local garage may end up being a costly trip. I know I could get the box replaced and may have to do this but just wondering if anyone can offer any advice.

Thanks

That kind of issue is normally the result of low oil, which may be backed up by the fact you have found a leak.

When the guy replaced the oil for you, did he fill it with the engine running? A common mistake is to fill it without the engine running which means you don't get anywhere near enough in ;)

Hi. My situation is similar to your problem.
Did you get to solve the gearbox problem out?
