Title: Headlight Levelling
Post by: philclemo on June 26, 2012, 01:50:42 PM
Another perennial!

I have had a couple of goes at the headlight levelling assemblies on our mk2 Gal. Basically, nothing happens when we try to adjust them. I have taken both units out, lubed the mechanism, every thing running freely, but no joy. I have checked that there is current going to them, and there is. One thing though, when the lights are first switched on the nearside motor tries to move. If I tapped the unit it would move and then return to it's start position. Nothing happens on the offside unit.

Do the units talk to each other to make sure they are set at the same level, and if one unit doesn't respond does the other do nothing?

Would it be easier to replace the motor unit(s) or replace the headlamps en bloc?

Done similar to mine lasted about a week ended up with new motors iirc about Ã,£30 each that was a few years ago

Nope there are no comm's between the headlights (unless you have xenon). The motor and resistor board are all one assembly and as Chris says can be replaced for about Ã,£30.

That said, they can normally be repaired a little - grease/oil will stop them working so ensure that is all clear. The normal cause of fail (especially if, like you, you can tap the headlight to get some movement) is that the metal case surrounding the resistor board isn't holding the wiper arm in place. Use a LITTLE force to bend the case down so the arm is wiper is held tight to the ladder. A little complicated to explain but if you take a photo I'll point the bits out- normally you can repair them quite easily if you catch it before the conductive material is worn off the bottom of the wiper...
