Is this a separate unit like on the MK2 or inbuilt as part of another ECU somewhere.

I've no direct experience, but the parts diagrams (http://eucatparts.com/?action=cat_ford_part&s_id_part=1233325&s_id_model=118&s_code_image=G014897404) suggest the system has it's own control module (15K866).
