Waiting on breakdown company.
Turn the key, engine start then dies. I have been having intermittent starting problems. It always start first time everyday. But occasionally once I stop and then try to restart it will either fire up and then die or it will turn over for several seconds and then start and be fine. Tonight my Gal has sat for a few hours, all she will do is fire up and then cut out.
I've just noticed that after it has cut and If leave the key alone, several seconds later the glow plug light comes on and flashes.
Any ideas?
Regards.
Stuart.
Sounds like the immobiliser. Have your keys come apart or had battery changed? The PATS chip may have fallen out.
Have you a spare key you can try?

Hi SilverBeast,
Yes you are correct. While I was working in a property My sister thought she'd be helpful and change the batteries while sitting in my Gal.
Recovery guy took me home to get my spare key...My Gal fired up first time.
Stuart.
Good stuff, were you able to find the chip that had fallen out?
Having said that, if you've had intermittent starting issues previously then presumably that's a separate issue, if the chip was only lost from the key last night?

Hi insanitybeard,
What does the chip look like?
I was hoping my intermittent starting problems were due to the key failing and was going to ask where can Iget a replacement.
Oh and what batteries are best for the keys?
Stuart.
There's a picture of the transponder in this (https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/ford-galaxy-immobiliser-key-programming-and-information-(mk2)/) procedure- third image down. Each remote key fob uses 2x CR2016 button cell batteries, use decent branded ones- e.g, Duracell, Panasonic, Varta etc, not cheap 99p store jobbies. Flat batteries won't affect the immobiliser operation though- only the remote locking.

Ah thank you, yep the chip is missing.. I've got some cheapo batteries which I won't bother to use.
I'll get some decent ones.
thanks again,
Stuart.
give your sister a slap for trying to be helpful :-\ ;),and do your best to try and find the chip.with any luck it will be found within the cabin, little black thing.if your lucky and find it stick it back into the key with a dab of glue.

If only.. Went back to the property yesterday and no luck.
So,, how much for a new chip?
Stuart.
To my knowledge you can't buy just the chip I'm afraid, it comes with the key blade, you may be able to buy aftermarket blades cheaper but they don't always come with the chip (or the right type anyway). If you buy it from Ford it's 28 odd quid- see here. (http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_galaxy_uncut_key_2000-2006_f_1114264_c_1037.htm) Be warned though, you'll only be able to programme it yourself (using the procedure I linked previously with the picture of the transponder chip) if you have two other working keys, otherwise it'll be a trip to Ford- and a lot more cost than 28 quid, unless you can get a locksmith to clone your existing working key.
As a temporary fix could I stick the one chip I have left next to the ignition barrel and still beable to
use both keys?
Stuart.
Seemed to easy :D
Tried it and no go
Stuart.
Found a site selling transponder chips.
Is this the correct chip?...

Yep, that does look like the right one. But it will still need programming to the vehicle before it will disarm the immobiliser and start the engine, and if you've only now got one usable key you won't be able to programme it yourself, which still means a trip to Ford and a hundred odd quid labour charge....... :(
Any idea how much a locksmith would charge to clone it from my working key?
I've seen fifty odd quid banded about as a cost for a locksmith to clone a key, though I don't have personal experience of this. If you do get a key cloned, bear in mind it won't count as an 'additional' key you can use to programme further keys, as it will have the same 'signature' as your existing key so the immobiliser effectively thinks they are one and the same.
Ã,£20.00 from my local locksmith, that including the chip.
was that for a cloned key?or a stand alone key?
Was it a locksmith "chain" or an independent?

I took my keys in, he put in a chip and cloned it from my working key.

No it's fine. I was thinking of getting a third key for mine so I still have a spare if I lose one of the two I have.
From your reply above it looks like you only got the immobiliser chip, and not the entire key.

That's correct. I was more than happy just to have a working spare again.
