Title: Screen Noise help
Post by: Stoz on May 29, 2015, 11:14:00 AM
Good Morning

I have recently purchased a 2014 Titanium Smax with the central sat Nav screen option included.  the issue I have is that the screen is giving off a high pitched (electrical sounding) whining noise.  The car is under warranty and I have taken it to the garage who say that they need to speak with technical and it may or may not be covered under warranty.  Im wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue.  the screen make the noise even if the screen is just on the clock and without the engine started.

any ideas?

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian, assuming its a very high pitch but reasonably quiet noise then it's caused by the high voltage board that drivers the LCD - specifically the smoothing capacitor(s) on it being faulty and you'll notice it any time the screen is on. It's a fairly common fault on anything that uses a screen and can be caused by very long periods of time without use and extreme heat.

I suspect you'll have difficulty getting it done under warranty because they'll argue its still working "normally" within the context of a navigation unit. Generally though once the caps have started the death squeal then its only a matter of time before the back light on the screen will fail so argue hard! :(

Is it a replacement screen or can the item be repaired?

Thanks

Depends on how its manufactured, some have separate HV boards that can either be replaced or repaired but others are integral in which case its a new screen. I'm not familiar with the unit so can't say...
