My 2001 Galaxy temperature gauge gets to 90 degrees, sits there for a bit then suddenly drops to the bottom then comes back up after a couple on minutes. Does anyone know what the problem could be.
Thanks.
The most likely culprit will be the coolant temperature sensor which I think lives in one of the coolant pipes in the vicinity of the radiator.
I assume the coolant level is ok and other than the dodgy temperature gauge the vehicle runs normally without issue?
The coolant temperature sensor on the PD engines is located at the rear of the cylinder head right hand side when looking under the bonnet, look at the link below.

With a faulty sensor you may have noticed a rise in the idle speed when the gauge is showing cold even though the engine is hot.
The sensor I was thinking of in the coolant pipe close to the radiator is for the fan, not the temperature gauge! I stand corrected.
Will check them when the weather is better. Thanks.
