I have just changed the fuel filter and flushed the coolant. After putting everything back together the engine does not fire up and then get oil light and engine stop message. If I just leave the ignition switch in position 2 the glow plug warning starts to flash yellow (Engine workshop message). I did disconnect a number of cables but have put them all back.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bad Fuel Filter maybe.

Hello and welcome5
What issues did you have prior to changing fuel filter and did you refill the new filter with clean diesel, if you didn't you will now have an air lock and will take lots of cranking to purge the air from the system, loosening an injector pipe will help.
When I changed my fuel filter I didn't bother filling the filter with fuel but read somewhere you need to turn the ignition on for a few seconds, then off, then repeat 10 times or so so that the pump pushes fuel through the filter.
I didn't have any issues starting, it just started normally.
(I know the pre facelift non-PDI engines have a different procedure but guessing yours is a Mk2 115/130 ??)

Yes your right that is the procedure for the MK2 as it has an intank pump, the MK1 doesn't have the intank pump and relies on the injector pump to suck the fuel up from the tank.

Marmand can you confirm your model as you say it's MK1 if it's 2001 it's a MK2 which has the PD engine and an intank pump.
I have a mk2 51plate. I have tried all the suggestions. If I try starting and leave it turning over, eventually I get a red oil light and stop notice. If I leave the ignition key in position2 eventually the glow plug warning flashes yellow and I get an "Engine Workshop" message.
Not sure where to go from here?
If the glow plug light flashes I'd think there would be some fault codes logged.
So first step would be VCDS / vag.com and go from there
So was there any issues before you changed filter or are you trying to cure an ongoing problem.
Isnt there a low coolant cutout job somewhere
