Title: front chassis legs/outrigger corrosion
Post by: daddyfixit on April 25, 2015, 05:08:37 PM
x-reg mk2 tdi;   something to look out for ???

had to repair a 2" hole I found last weekend while car was on ramp getting new exhaust middlebox.  were the osf chassis joins the outrigger that leads to the sill---very thick underseal was hiding a mousehole !!!

3" x 3" plate was easy to do & then seam sealed and stone chipped

it went for mot today and the nearsides the same !!!!

should have scraped the stonechip away last week but didn't......................

same repair and motd again within the hour.

Ahh, this is the T shape join to the outrigger yeah? It seems to be quite common for these to rust, I notice a lot of tyre places will jack the car up here (if they aren't crushing the sills instead!) but it's not a rated point so deforms - probably cracking the underseal in the process. There are some natural holes in that plate as well and I imagine that water is blown into them and takes a long time to come back out since its a flat box!
