hi i am new here because i have an intermitent problem on a 03 1.9tdi 115 auto . in the last few weeks we have developed a vibration possibly from the front of the car when you go over 50mph doesn't allways do it as we've just done 700 miles down in france and only slight vibration at around 70-75mph .is it likely to be the driveshaft or cv joints as the bearings feel good and had newly fitted/balanced front tyres fitted 2 weeks ago.. thanks
Hi Colin and welcome along!
I would suggest its the new front tyres that have been badly balanced. Its unfortunately quite common for fitters not to care that much about where they put the weights on which when coupled with the fact the Galaxy is a very fussy car with balancing, leads to wobbling. Take it back and get them to redo it before suspecting any fault with the car :)
When they balance the wheels they *should* run them to speed, stick/tap on the weights and then run them up again - most "quick" places don't do the second run up.
the problem had started before the tyres had been changed . thought the tyres might of been to blame as the wear was uneven and tread depth was very low on the near side in particular . the vibrations seem to be less now the tyres have been changed
It would be worth swapping the fronts and rears over just to be sure but the next thing to look at would be the inner CV joint. Its a tripod joint running on 3 bearings so its essential its well greased, its been known for the CV grease to "cook" and turn to more of a paste in which case it can be as simple as re-greasing the joint.
ok give it a try and see what happens .. many thanks
Hi guys, I had the exact same problem 18 months ago. It was the cv joint ,I fitted a new drive shaft with cv's prefitted, handy job and cheaper!
that kind of narrows it down a bit . try and get a look at the weekend weather permitting ...many thanks
