First post on here. Found lots of useful info.
I have a 2005 galaxy 1.9 TDI. I have a vibration on idle that goes away as soon as you hit the biting point when in gear at idle revs or rev the engine slightly when not in gear. Its still there when the clutch is pressed without selecting a gear with no vibrations on the clutch pedal. I have recently changed the clutch pulley as it was seized.
I was reading about the roll restrictor but don't know if this is the problem.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Hi Paul, unfortunately that sounds like it may be dual mass flywheel breaking up :(
Thanks for the quick reply. The clutch and dmf were replaced which i forgot to mention. I read that dmf failure had vibrations transmitted through clutch pedal. I don't have this. The vibration is on idle and does not disappear when the clutch is pressed. It does get more noticeable just as the engine is switched off as the revs fall to zero.
Is this still dmf failure.
How many miles ago was the Dual mass flywheel replaced? Problems in the auxiliary drivebelt system could be responsible for such faults, you say you've renewed the alternator clutch pulley but I think the belt tensioners can cause trouble, with age the spring weakens and the unit won't tension the belt properly leading to fluctuating tension and potential vibration. The crankshaft pulley could also be suspect if the rubber bonding between the centre and outer metal sections has started to fail. Is the vibration worse if you switch the heated front screen and/or the aircon on?
exact same symptoms as mine and it was dog bone mount. Easy to access at bottom of engine, take off and see if the rubber bushes are shot...
Dmf and clutch kit changed less than 1k ago. Quietened it down lots especially the vibration in the clutch pedal has gone but this vibration or rumbling has always been there since Dmf change. It's not overly loud but annoying.

Yep, same thing, an aluminium arm connecting the gearbox to the subframe.
Just thought I would come back to update and thank you all for the diagnosis.
I was very busy the last few weeks but finally got round to looking into this.
It was the roll restrictor/gearbox mount. The rubber bush had come away allowing the large part to knock against the smallest section.
Very quiet now.
