Title: fuel economy
Post by: huxlee on January 05, 2015, 09:15:46 PM
hi

just wondering what kind of MPG other owners are getting from there 163Bhp Diesel?

I've now covered 700 miles and averaged 36Mpg on the first tank and I'm currently sitting on 38Mpg  on this tank of fuel.
I've spent most of my driving on dual or motorways travelling 72 Mph at the most, and the eco flower symbol's are all green.
before I call my local ford dealership for further investigation, I thought id ask the forum to get an average

thanks

blimey... I was expecting 46 ish MPG against a book combined of 53Mpg.

have you been to the dealers to check why its so low?

We've had discussions on here about said subject, 37-38 is the norm.
I did speak with the dealer when car went for it's first service and they said you will never get what is advertised in the handbook.
I did have issues with stalling which was greatly improved with a software update but did nothing to improve MPG.
My lease is up next month and the new car will be a VW Sharan 2.0 TDI 140 SE so watch this space for the MPG figures.

had some nice conversations with Ford customer services today, car is booked in Monday morning for investigation

well, car went yesterday, engineer checked through and couldn't find anything untoward, he took it for a 25 mile round trip on dual carriageway to see what figures he could record.
on average he recorded 38-40 mpg driving 60-70 mph, and 45 for town driving ?  which is confusing as there are consistent gear changes in town driving.

they have now installed the latest ECU software update, to see if there's any improvement and i've got to report back in a week.

also ford customer service has contacted me for an update on the findings,  and they will contact me on Friday for an update.

more info added when I have some to report

Well that would be a bonus if I was driving it hard, the only time mines ever showed high forties is after resetting trip computer then coasting downhill, but that's not a good average, what sort of mileage do you get from a tank of fuel.

the first tank I reset too early , the second tank from empty to full 530 miles 36mpg, which was close to the computer.
current tank is reading 100 miles 43.7 mpg, so far.
interestingly my fuel economy rises a lot when travelling home at night when its cold than going to work in the afternoon when warmer?
I will see if this is the same next week when I'm working early shifts.

Yes anywhere between 500 and 550 is usual for our car

I was getting around 650 miles per tank in the 62 plate taxi but these engines only give their best economy after around 40000mls ! - I now have 2015 titanium x 163 powershift and after 1200 miles is averaging 47 - I'll keep you posted - anyone else think the nav plus is useless ?

I wonder if being a working Taxi
helps consumption as engine temperatures
tend to stay up.
also is it stop start town work?

well since my car went into the local ford dealers and had the new ECU update my car is now averaging 43Mpg, an increase of 8 MPG from the very first tank.
car computer read 42.8mpg, I filled the car with 61.7 litres, I travelled 581 miles = 43 MPG  :D

I've had two follow up calls from Ford customer service concerning the low consumption to see if there's been any change, and they will be following up with an other call in two weeks time for a further update.

current consumption 44.2.

:) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D

Well all I can say is there must be a lot of cars out there with a problem, I guess there must be more software updates since mine was done

wish mine got something like that.but as its used mainly for town driving really cant see it ever improving.

chris when the missus had her smax there was a few thousand k's on the clock,we took it to wales so longish journeys all the time and basically its was shiote.we did complain but they never done anything about it.
the tiguan was doing about 45 mpg straight out of the dealership. :)

to be fair my main journeys are north norfolk to london or rural work but none of my tdi models ever dropped below 44mpg even in cities - powershift models seem to do the same as the 2 manuals I had in 2010 /2011 - my 1.6 ecoboost is a different matter that will drop to 28-29 around town but will do 40-45 on runs - funnily the tdi I just sold at 73000mls was just down to limit on it's 2nd set of tyres the ecoboost is heading for its 3rd set at 40000 -

another tank full , 599 miles, 73.6 litres filled, 42.7MPG its looking consistant

Little bit confused by your figures!!
Are you using the calculation that one gallon is 5 litres or the correct figure of 4.546?
73.6 litres divided by 4.5 =16.35 gallons so 599 miles divided by 16.35 gallons =36.6 MPG

Oops 63.6 litres..... It would be very impressive to fill 73 litres into a 70 litre fuel tank.

1UK gal = 4.5461L

63.6 L divided by 4.5461 = 13.99 gallons (14 gallons)

599 miles divided by 14G = 42.78 mpg
