Title: Strut tops touching bodywork
Post by: AJS on January 05, 2015, 12:15:59 PM
Hi,

I have had my front shocks replaced and now found that the cups on the top of the struts are resting on the bodywork. When the car is jacked or goes over a bump there is clearance due to the "floating" design. What has gone wrong? The mechanic who did the job is out the country for a few weeks so I can't compare what was removed from what was fitted. Shocks are Bilstein B4, mounting kit (rubber and bearing) is Febi. Plate at top of spring was replaced as the centre was worn to an oval (sourced from ford agent).

3 pictures attached - but don't show on preview??

p.s. A big thanks to all the contributors - this is my first post, but I have benefited several times from the knowledge on this forum.

Adam

Greetings!

There was a similar question to this posed recently- see here (https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy/front-suspension-trouble-safe-to-drive/), there should also be a link to a parts diagram for the front suspension within that thread if that helps.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.  I have no body damage or broken welds.  All the parts appear to be common to all models. Could anyone tell me how much clearance there should be?

I recently replaced my top mount bushes and bearings as well as the spring cups like you - did not have any issues.

Does it clonk when going over bumps or are there other issues - although I couldn't feel any in mine once the top mounts replaced I think some play is normal.

So I can only assume either the new shocks are the incorrect parts or it has somehow been assembled incorrectly.

Reckon you'll have to take at least one side out to take a look - do you still have the old shocks by any chance so you can compare ??
