Title: Galaxy mk2 tdi starting problems
Post by: ashy401 on December 30, 2014, 09:45:53 PM
Hi my mk2 Galaxy tdi auy engine. Started driving got 400metre down the road and changed up gear and revs just went and car stopped switched off. Tried to start again I would fire and cut out instantly. Towed it back to family members house. Car still will not start. I have today changed the fuel filter and relay 109. Stil no change. Car turns over fires up instantly and then cuts out. Door lad flashes fast. If I leave the ignition on after two or three minutes the coil light flashes and display says engine workshop.
Trying to get hold of a vcds so I can check for fault codes.

Need the car running again by the 3 jan to go bk home.

Any help appreciated.

Door led indicates immobiliser active,  on the tdi it will fire and them immediately die - just like you have. The flashing glowplug ia also normal when its active.

If you have another key try that, else did you change the key batteries as sounds like pats chip has gone awol

Hi I only have one key for this car. The pats chip is still in the key. Is there any way round it that's not gonna cost loads of money.

Although you have classic symptoms of the pats chip missing (the starting then immediately dying) as this first happened while driving the car would make me think you have a cam belt issue.
Has the belt been renewed recently or is it due to be changed.

I suggest you get a VAG-COM/VCDS lead from ebay (<Ã,£10) and use it with the free VCDS-Lite software from Ross-Tech.  This will give you a more useful output (and diagnose more of the electrical systems on your vehicle)

It does sound like the immobiliser.  Try removing any other keys from your keyring, as another car key with a similar system may interfere with the PATS system.

Did you check for the PATS chip in the key?

Think I would physically check the timing before going any further, if the belt has become loose for what ever reason, even if only to rule it out.

Hi don't think its the timing as it starts as soon as the key turns but then cuts out after a second or two.

This is the only car key I have on the key ring. When I put the key in the ignition an turn so ignition light are on. The door light come on and goes off. After a couple of times trying to start it the light will come then flash until I take key out and put it bk in.
Is the any way to reset it but I only have one key for vehicle.

The door light does flash quickly on mine for a short time if I turn ignition off and on quickly and start engine, even when engine starts and runs fine.  This is usually because I haven't let it crank long enough, because it usually starts immediately.

If you crank it once till it fires how long is it before it cuts out? What does the door LED do in this case? (before you turn off ignition and try to re-start) It believe it usually runs for about a second if it is the immobiliser cutting off.

I probably won't answer as I'm off skiing for a week, but I'm sure one of the Forum guru's will.

Hi all thanks for your help.
I towed it round to my parents today and tried to bump start it on the way. While the gear was engaged an turning over after a couple of seconds the oil light would come on the the display would say STOP then oil pressure then engine workshop.
Think I'm just gona sell spares or repairs and get another one.

Thanks

Where abouts are you? Someone local might be able to scan your car with VCDS for you...

As the fault code was previously read with a generic reader is it possible the 'engine speed sensor' it was referring to was the camshaft position sensor and not the crank sensor?

G28 is the crank sensor
G40 is the cam sensor

The OP referred to the G28
