Title: Galaxy Mk2 1.9tdi Ghia 130 electrical starting problems
Post by: glynbud@sky.com on December 14, 2014, 03:53:27 PM
Hi my 2005 1.9tdi Ghia manual is experiencing starting problems
I have fitted a new starter motor, alternator, and battery
the engine cranks over fine but just wont fire up.
If I bump start the car it fires up straight away.
I have checked relay 109 it working fine with low 0.1ohms resistance.
even tried the spare key with exactly same results
it will start sometimes off the key but very unreliable when it is going to start the sound of starter motor is slightly higher pitched
any ideas welcomed   >:(

Possibly a dodgy ignition switch. As you probably know the Mk2 Galaxy is largely VW parts and 2005 was one of the very last Mk2's. 2006 VW's have/had a known fault with the ignition switch which were manufactured in 2005 - hence the possibility.

Attached is a wiring diagram for the starter circuit, you can see there are two feeds from the ignition switch on the TDI.

Thanks for your reply
I have managed to get to the bottom of it,
I changed the starter motor as it was lazy cranking over in mornings with the weather getting colder I didn't want to be let down by my car. After fitting the new starter motor the car would not start but was turning over I thought very well, I then noticed that the alternator workshop warning illuminated on the dash, So I fitted a new alternator,The car would intermittently start but was very unreliable, I drop tested the battery seemed ok but as a recommendation I changed it for a new one, Still had the same problem good cranking speed but just wouldn't fire up but bumped started very easy, I was getting very annoyed at this point after spending loads of dosh and getting no where.
I finally re-fitted my original starter motor and now have no problems.. The new starter motor must have been pulling too much current starving the other electrical circuits.
So the original problem must have been a dodgy cell in my battery . Big thanks to Simon Chadwick autos Willaston

Are you sure it's got nothing to do with the alternator charging cable where it connects to the battery junction box? (https://www.fordmpv.com/smf2/ford-galaxy-reference-library/battery-junction-boxauxiliary-fuse-box-repair/) This could affect the recharging of the battery when the engine is running.
