Before I bought my Galaxy 1.9tdi Ghia 115 2005 Auto last year I was advised by a friend Ex MOT tester not to go for a Automatic. But I never listened to him and brought myself an Auto. After buying my car I did some research online and I came across loads of people complaining about their Gearboxes and I began to question if I made a big mistake.
After more research I came to a conclusion that these people having problems with their gearboxes have one thing in common which was there been pulling something other words tow-bar is fitted to there cars and possibly causing damage to there gearboxes due to heavy loads. (I might be wrong) :-\
As a precaution I decided to have my Gearbox oil Changed although my car has no tow bar fitted which cost me around Ã,£200 from ford. Would have also changed filter but on my car it was not changeable also I asked ford to show me the old oil which they took out it was Dark Brown/ almost black in colour the new oil was pick/cherry red in colour
I think everyone should consider changing their Gearbox oil
Also I phoned around local garages no one could change the oil on ford galaxy due to the fact that special tools were needed.
Well its a very valid point your raise, auto boxes rely very heavily on the oil so keeping it in good condition is wise!
One thing to note, there is a how-to in the reference library for changing the oil on the Auto box - no special tools are needed other then ability to read the temperature which could be done with VCDS or even a laser thermometer. Not sure why they said they couldn't do it! There is indeed a filter on these but for some inexplicable reason its buried deep within the gearbox so the only way to change it is to remove and dismantle the box!
Did you notice any difference after it was done? The few that I've done felt noticeable smoother after the service.
