hi guys just a quick question i noticed a slight rumbling noise coming from front end of my sharan witch got louder and at 40 mph was unbearable was told wheel bearings so replaced both sides with new ones to discover noise still there so sought advice again and was told cv end joints so again bought new ones fitted them and yes you guessed it noise still there heavy rumble with a sort of du,du,du,du,du noise going on behind it getting frustrated at what else it could be and just throwing cash at it any ideas guys thanks
Was it the inner or outer CV joints that were changed? Is the noise present at all times when you're moving or does it change when you steer/ go round a corner? And does the noise change if you push the clutch pedal in whilst going along (therefore taking the load off of the drivetrain)?
Normally, a constant rumbling or regular pulsing type sound does relate to something in the drivetrain- such as CV joints or wheelbearings though not always- what conditions are the brake discs and pads in? Have you gone over any potholes that could have damaged the wheels? (though if it's been looked at by a garage I would have expected them to have checked this kind of stuff)
Carbuncle (lump) on a tyre maybe.
hi thanks for the reply yeah brakes and discs seem ok as i changed the pads right round about 3 mths ago i changed the outer cv joints was told today it could possibly be the hubs as if the bearings werent changed out straight away it could have caused them to oval and putting new wheel bearings in wouldnt make much diffrence
I'm not sure if the Mk1's suffer the same as the Mk2's because the driveshaft & CV joint arrangement on the Mk1 is different (I think) to the Mk2. However, on the Mk2's it is nearly always the inner CV joints that cause the trouble, not the outer ones, so if you haven't done the inners I'd be taking a good look at those.
Regarding the wheel bearings and oval hubs, to be completely honest with you I don't really buy that, for the hubs to be damaged and made oval the wheel bearings would have had to have been completely knackered before you changed them- as in the wheel about ready to fall off. Being that you've changed both front bearings and it's made no difference then they probably weren't in need of changing in the first place!

I know your car is a mk1 but from my personal experience I'd go for inner cv joint (mk2) problem. Mine had totally failed to the extent that my opposite wheel to where the cv joint had failed was about to fall off due to the nuts becoming loose!!
yeah im deffo swayed on that it being inner cv joint aint had a chance to look at it yet but which side do you recon it would most likely to be which one is prone to go cheers john

Hey I'm not sure if one side is more probe to failure than the other although mine was the drivers side that failed. When my car was up on the ramp there was a lot up upward/downward travel on the shaft!!
yeah i think i would agree the noise seems to emanate more on the drivers side well thats where i seem to hear it the loudest plus the vibration seems more on that side cheers m8
