Title: Grinding Wheel Fault / No Power
Post by: bensewell1982 on August 04, 2014, 09:51:23 AM
I was happily coming back from a hundred or so mile trip when I slowed down for a roundabout then put it in second and powered on to then hear the revs go high and followed by a grinding noise with no power at all and not working in any gear.  I put the car in neutral and coasted to a layby.

Then tested all gears and was the same no power at all.

Rang the AA who came out and said it might be something to do with the intermediate drive shaft teeth being worn?  I hope so this is the best case tbh as seeing your guide it looks like my mechanic mate can sort it out for a pretty low amount.

Here is a video of noise and what happens when i try to dip the clutch when its in gear.

Someone said it could be the clutch?

Got a mate coming to look at it and take it from there.  Its sad that due to its pretty low value if its a mega expensive bill it might be going to the scrappers....

You can get one from eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-GALAXY-SEAT-ALHAMBRA-VW-SHARAN-INTERMEDIATE-DRIVESHAFT-DRIVE-SHAFT-OFFSIDE-/170915800577

If you can select all gears normally with the engine running but you've just got no drive then it's highly unlikely to be the clutch at fault, as you've already surmised the symptoms sound dead right for the ol' intermediate shaft splines sheared off unfortunately.......  :(

If I were a betting man, I'd put my house on that being the splines - classic lead up and symptoms. Should be a cheapish fix though which is good!

Do you mind if I rob that video for inclusion in our reference library post?

It is the shaft my mate says so.  Yay! The wagon will live onto to see another day.  Thanks for the links to the parts.  You are legends ;)

Oh and yes please feel free to use any stuff I post up.  I was an active member of a MGTF site until project twins started I'm pretty OK with the tools once I know what I'm faced with.  Must have been years if lego'ing practice as a kid.

;)

Resurrecting this thread...

Just an update really.

NO PROBLEMS since the intermediate drive shaft has been replaced.  Gearstick still feels a bit notchy but all is well.  I've done about 5k on it with no issue at all.

The eBay part was spot on.
