I am having problems with my speedometer fluctuating at high speeds and freezing at times. The car is an automatic so I cannot find any reference in the manual to where the speed sensor is located (manual only mentions manual). does anyone know where to start to solve this problem.

Also I have two other small problems.

1.My exhaust is rattling. All the mounts are still fitted but the exhaust has moved slightly to one side. Can this be adjusted or will it require new mounts.

2. I am trying to replace the eccentric or paddle in a door lock for the the central locking. Does anyone know of a good uk based supplier or if the part is available from other cars. (Have tried  polo, golf so far and they do not fit)

cant help you personally with your 1st couple of questions,

but have you looked on ebay as there are various bods selling lock repair kits for these type of cars.

I'm not very well up with the autoboxes and being that it's a Sharan I presume it's a VW engine as well, but assuming it's a 4 speed auto this (http://www.partsbase.org/vw/sharan-syncro-4motion-sha-eu-1999-40950-differential-final-drive-oil-cooler-for-4-speed-automatic-gearbox/) parts diagram would suggest the speedo drive consists of a drive gear and pinion (items 14 & 16), which then drives a sensor- number 6 here. (http://www.partsbase.org/vw/sharan-syncro-4motion-sha-eu-1999-91900-combi-instrument-distance-sensor/) It doesn't make it very clear unfortunately from the diagrams where the sensor sits but as the pinion is driven off of a gear on the diff, I would expect it to be on top of the gearbox casing somewhere near where the offside driveshaft emerges from the gearbox- possibly it sits in the hole you can see in the top of the bolt on housing (number 20) on the first diagram.

As for the exhaust- has it been disturbed or renewed? Unless the mounting 'arms' have simply moved within their rubber mounts or one section is twisted at one of the joints which secures with a clamp, it's unlikely to shift position by itself unless corrosion somewhere has caused it to drop or move, or it has had a substantial impact.

Is the exhaust actually touching something or is it rattling internally the baffles may be detached inside the box.

I have managed to find a reference in the Haynes manual for the speed sensor. It isn't very clear without reading the entire chapter but for anyone who needs to know it says it is located at the end of the right hand driveshaft where it goes into the autotrans box. Now just need to figure out if it can be got to without having a garage do it.

After getting under car properly the rubber mount s seems ok. The can be moved back and forth along the mount rods which I assume is normal. I think the main culprit now is the heatshield which is corroded at one of the pins that secure it to the chassis. Anyone have anyideas on a fix for this as it doesn't look like I can access the pins from above .
