If you put your ear to each one they make a ticking noise if they don't then it could be faulty. Or if you have the vag lead I believe you can check them out using some free software

Easiest to check with free VAG-COM/VCDS-LITE and lead from  [eBay] (<Ã,£10 from UK) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-OBD2-II-KKL-ECU-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-LEAD-FD232B-chip-compatible-with-VCDS-LITE-/330752513588?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4d0262d634 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-OBD2-II-KKL-ECU-DIAGNOSTIC-CABLE-LEAD-FD232B-chip-compatible-with-VCDS-LITE-/330752513588?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4d0262d634) .  It will tell you the distance each of the 4 (8 if you have front and rear) sensors is seeing.

If you have a towbar check the ball cover isn't being picked up by the inner sensors, mine picks it up intermittently if it is cock-eyed.
