If it's gone suddenly I would suggest possible brake band has broke.

Is that a new box or can I fix it at home

If it is what Chris has suggested it'll be either a gearbox repair by a specialist or a replacement 'box, it's not something the average person could do at home unfortunately as the gearbox would require removal from the vehicle to be dismantled.

Towing puts a lot of extra strain on the transmission, the galaxy is already a heavy car and let's face facts they are not designed for that purpose.
Don't get me wrong I have also towed with an auto but it's always on the back of my mind that something will go wrong.
A manual transmission is the safest bet if your towing.

I would hazard a guess that your local transmission repairer will give you a set all in price  for going right through your box replacing all the necessary bits with a guarantee, if you tell them to only replace the part that's at fault there may be no guarantee, they may even decline doing the job.
