Unfortunately I don't recall the name of the transmission used in the Mk1 TDI, I presume it's a manual? 5 speed? I assume as it's a VW powerplant then it will also be a VW transmission, just like the 6 speed manual used with the TDI in the Mk2.

Thanks for the help guys. I have a spare gearbox now to possibly sell as I erroneously replaced mine when the only fault turned out to be stiff linkages 😡. I suppose that as it is a ford unit it will only fit mark I galaxys or possibly some other fords with 1.9 tdi?

The VXT75 was also used in the Mk2 2.3 petrol- but I expect the gear ratios are different to the TDI- it's quite confusing, the Mk2 TDI's used the Economy 6 VW manual transmission (which Ford called MT350) but the Mk1 TDI used a Ford 5 speed VXT75 manual transmission..... which I imagine was also used on the Mk1 Ford engined petrol models (not sure about the V6), but probably with different gear ratios so that they are not directly interchangeable!  ???
