had to replace 1 of my headlight bulbs this evening,h1.
took the whole of the headlight unit out(2 screws)replaced with a new bulb,got home to find the bulb on the opposite headlight has now blown aswell.
coincidence?or looming electrical problems?

I'm not saying that there is no problem but I don't think that what you describe is all that uncommon, if the bulbs were both original ones prior to bring changed then they would have both done exactly the same number of work hours before failure, on my little Ka I owned (from new) before the Galaxy I recall headlamp bulbs blowing very close together- though not quite as close as yours! It was within a few weeks certainly.
Just thought I'd dig this up and add my experience of fitting bulbs today, I looked on here and online and saw it's an awkward job so popped to Halfords.
The chap there worked on plenty of Sharans and even though he had huge hands go the job done in 10mjnsnwithout taking the units out.
3.99 per side to fit.

Well thats good news and also interesting! Did he use any tools or remove anything? It is a PITA job to do but the only real way as the big problem with removing the headlight is how do you correct the aim afterwards? From experience, the amount of adjustment available on the headlight mounting points is significant and WILL effect the aim of the beam considerably!! If its working then you can mark the patten on a wall first but if blown you are stuffed.
No tools to remove anything bar a flat screwdriver to lever the clips.
He used to work at VW so did plenty of sharans so lots of practice I guess!
