Title: Intermediate Drive shafts on automatic gearboxes
Post by: cr3wchief on January 19, 2014, 03:15:04 PM
Hi  I have A 02 plate 1.9TDI and the splines on the intermediate drive shaft have failed. Easy job dismantling following your excelent article on this site. The problem is i can't find any where other than ford that can sell me a replacement parts, they quoted best part of Ã,£600. lots of people seem to make replacements for manual gearbox cars but not auto's Does any body know where i can get one, there are several second hand shafts on Ebay but not the gearbox shaft and i'd prefer to use new bits and are the gearbox stub axels the same for manual and auto? im sure someone must have come across this before, any help would be good, a link to someone would brilliant. Thanks

Hi, the auto stub is definitely different where it enters the gearbox, I couldn't tell you if the half-shaft is the same or not but I would guess not as the length will differ to absorb the difference between the manual and auto boxes.

The shaft on the automatic is definitly longer and the bearing isn't so close to the outer drive flange. however the stub shaft that fits in the gearbox looks the same as the ones advertised with the manual shafts on ebay.

They carry different part numbers though so there must be some difference

I just changed the driveshaft on a v6 auto and the part for manual and auto was different (on the v6 I think the number of splines was different but not sure but was told that manual would not work on auto for sure). The v6 auto is a 5spd tiptronic. Not sure if same as diesel.

My local garage sourced a recon part and took my old in exchange for Ã,£155.00. It took a week to get in stock though.
