We own a Galaxy Trend 1.8TDCi 5Gear 100HP MY 2006, actually 91.000km on the counter. We bought it second hand and had the problem that the motor often stalled when driving off. This was the first time we drove a common rail diesel engine of this power. We were used to a VW Sharan so equivalent to a Galaxy MKI with a 2l Diesel engine but with a classical Bosch Diesel pump. This car had a lot of torque but also slightly more HP.
We were told there was a software upgrade available dating from after 2008 or so because a lot of car owners had problem with the torque and stalling. This car had never had the software update and after the update the perforamance is better, but still not at level of the Sharan. Is it a fact that the torque of common rail diesels at RPM below Turbo really being efficient is less than with a Bosch Diesel pump?

Have to agree I had to have my 61 reg done I've never stalled a vehicle so much in my life really embarrassing.
Having the update has improved things but can still catch you out, thats progress for you.
not just the mk3,used to happen to me on the better halfs smax(60 reg).
my 1 which is an 08 reg a lot less frequently. ;)
Hi, I've just purchased a 2007 1.8 Diesel Galaxy with the same issue. I've read that a tuning chip will assist with this issue any thoughts ?
What does seem to work with the 1.8s is to blank the EGR valve. There is no monitoring on the 1.8, so no funny lights as happens with the 2 & 2.2. This cured the low-speed hesitation on mine completely. The alternative was to remove the EGR valve and restore it to fully working condition - not a task to be undertaken lightly on these engines.
The only downside is that the engine takes longer to warm up in winter - about 7-8 miles or 15 minutes for me.

I have a 1.8tdci 07 galaxy and have same problem with torque. It seems to be slow away and then kicks in. Ive been told that if the egr is blanked off its and MOT failiure instantly, is this true.
No. Not inspected at MOT. You may (also) have issues with the variable vanes of your turbo.
As above not inspected on mot as yet,but dvsa are apparently looking in to changing mot's to check egr operation along with a different emissions test that checks for particles on DPF equipped cars along with the usual smoke test,told this by an MOT tester mate Time will tell if it does come in the future.
