The centre of the expansion tank cap has come off, the centre stays firmly wedged in the hole and only the plastic part of the cap comes off, it looks as though I should be able to just prise the centre out of the hole and clip it back together, but should I get a new one anyway?

I'm not that familiar with the Mk3 setup but most expansion caps also include a pressure release valve should the pressure ever get excessive - I can't really visualise exactly whats happened to your cap but for the sake of a tenner its probably worth changing if its faulty.
