Need to buy a new rachet set and wonering what else I would need for basic (oil and filter) servicing of a 2002 1.9 TDI
Don't want to over spend, but at the same time know well that cheap tools tend not to last.
Presume I will need a torque wrench and extenders to get off the bolts off the under engine tray.
Could someone advise on a reasonable kit, maybe using Halfords as a example, so I can visualize easier.

if you do not want to remove your under tray,then have a think about 1 of these.ive got 1 and used it on my old gal with no problems.

No no no man! They are for Smarts and Ups! Personally, I'd stay well clear of a pump as it never gets all the particles out of the sump and most times not even all the old oil.
A basic halfords socket set should be all you need for an oil/filter change, and there tools are actually very well made:
Basic Set (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_164275_langId_-1_categoryId_255215) or Slighly more advanced set (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_241771_langId_-1_categoryId_255215). The important bit is that the wrench has an extender bar so you can get up to undershield bolts - the second set looks to have two, the first set one which probably won't give enough reach.
A basic ratchet wrench like these is all that's really required for the oil filter change. A torque wrench isn't needed here as none of the bolts need a critical torque value although if you wanted to be precise then they probably are published somewhere :)
Ohh and lots of newspaper, towels and kitchen roll and a bin liner to wrap all the old crap up in :)

Going to get some from Halfords and a extender kit.
Did think about the pump, and wondered how it could get any sludge out.
I have used a similar thing for a fish pond, and that would leave the sludge intact at the bottom.
