My petrol gauge often shows it is empty and beeps emit from the car then 5 mins later it the warning lights goes off and it thinks it has more fuel in it. This can happen 2-3 times and the only way I am sure that I am not gonna run dry is to use the odometer to the exact mile since last fuel fill up etc.
Is this likely to be the sender unit in the tank? and if so is it hard to replace with a new one or can the old one be made to work by a repair?
How much are the units approx.?
Car is a Galaxy 2.3 Petrol MK2 Zetec.
Many thanks peeps.

They do tend to show empty when facing down hill if less than a quarter of a tank of fuel.
If you think the sensor is faulty it can be accessed through the plate in the floor under the middle row of seats after lifting carpet etc.
