Can some kind person either provide a 'Numpty Guide' to obtaining/downloading (free?) VCDS diagnostic software, or point out precisely where in the forum this can be found, if it already exists.
The vehicle is the Alhambra 2.0 with BRT/PD engine.

No problemo at all!

I downloaded my copy from the following web site:

https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/download/

You also need a cable which has USB on one end (to plug into your laptop microcomputer) and a strange socket known as an "OBD 2" which plugs into the motor car.

There are many fun settings to play around with using this software. My favourite one is the one where it tells you how many cm an object is away from the parking sensor!
I drive a Seat Alhambra 1.9Tdi which has 115bhp and an automatic gearbox.

I am happy to help you with all your questions. I am not a qualified mechanic but seem to be better at fixing my car than even the most experienced garages.
