Quote from: VW Reference InformationInternal VW Name: Designation A - Platform 09A (09B Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy)
Max. Torque: 350 Nm
Weight Unladen: 89.5 kg
Weight Laden: 101.5 kg
ATF Oil Specification: G 052 990
Capacity 9 Litres
Oil-change Quantity: 5 Litres (7 Litres when changing the converter)

First locate the oil filler, this is near the top of the box on the front side - its best accessed by removing the engine over cover (Pull up at the front and then forward) and then look down, almost directly under the engine bay fusebox.

If the filler has never been disturbed then a red anti-tamper sleeve will be fitted which will need to be broken off (not shown). VW recommend fitting a new one on completion although it's not really needed. With the sleeve removed the cap is a simple push fit, revealing the filler hole.

With access now available to the filler, the box can now be drained. The vehicle needs to be flat and ideally, as with all oil changes, the fluid at near operating temperature. Remove the under-shield for access to the bottom of the gearbox and look for the drain and level plugs:

The large 24mm plug is the drain, the smaller hex plug is the level check. Undo the drain plug and allow the oil to drain. When satisfied the oil is drained, replace the drain plug and remove the level check plug.

Pour new fluid into the filler slowly and stop when it starts to flow out of the level check - replace the check plug. The design of the box means you'll only ever drain around half the total quantity at a time.

Next the car should be started and the gearbox put into each gear for around 10 seconds to fully circulate the fluid. Ideally, connect VCDS up and check the fluid temperature:

The value in field 1 is the fluid temp in °C. We want to wait until the transmission temperature reaches 40°C - at that point cycle the gears again, ending in park and leaving the engine running.

The level is correct only when the transmission is turning - going under a vehicle where the engine is running can obviously be extremely dangerous so EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION AT THIS POINT. Ensure that no children or animals are likely to enter the car who could knock the lever - its worth having someone stand by.

Undo the level plug once more. If fluid comes out then wait until it stops else add more until it begins overflowing - the level is now correct.
